Review

Facilitating children’s understanding of Eid, its meaning and importance is vitally important for children’s wellbeing in order to garner a sense of celebration, excitement and fun within a faith context. The book under review will have a global appeal to Muslim children and possibly to other children who are not Muslims, but who are interested in learning about Eid and how it is celebrated. The text is a particularly important contribution in a Western setting, where children attending non-Muslim state schools will be presented with an array of activities relating to Christmas while simultaneously associating with children for whom Christmas is the principle celebration of the year. While it is easy for children to become enthralled with Christmas due to its glittering, sparkly appeal and material attractions, which can appear particularly alluring, and while a respectful appreciation of the event should be encouraged, it is at the same time important to emphasise the two Eid occasions as the significant celebrations for the Muslim child.
