Rarely does an outstanding, published children’s book outshine all others of a similar genre, which pale into insignificance by way of comparison. Designed for a six to ten years age cohort, My Beautiful Birds is a text that possesses a timeless appeal – an angelic touch, and could be distributed to all primary schools across Britain. Young children across the country can benefit from the powerful, yet uniquely simple, way in which an array of compassionate and deeply penetrating messages, regarding contexts of unsettlement and resettlement and what it can mean to be a refugee, are empathetically presented to children. While current generations of adults do not care sufficiently for fellow humanity, subsequent generations of young children, with a future to determine, can offer alternative trajectories. Through illustrating vulnerability, the text encourages a view of all people as inherently human and worthy of receiving fundamental levels of dignity, whereby their most basic needs are addressed by humane responses to crises as they arise.
