Review

This introductory text to the teachings of the Qur’an designed for young children from the age of two years plus, aims to explain fundamental Islamic tenets in an accessible, appealing manner. The thick cardboard pages are created to withstand robust treatment meted out by childish hands eager to explore the attractive pages which are, in turn, beautifully illustrated, using vibrantly striking colours and supported by a skeletal approach to prose. There is a particularly engaging illustration on page 18, where a family is pictured prostrating in prayer, while an infant is depicted attempting to copy their actions, albeit in a topsy-turvy manner. Simplicity is the beauty of a book such as this for parents. A nominal script provides a foundational opportunity for developing children’s understanding of the Qur’an and their relationship with God, which can be tailored to, and elaborated upon by the reader, according to the age, ability and comprehension possessed by an individual child. The illustrations provide a story by themselves and give parents a lot of material with which to engage their child around Qur’anic precepts....
