Review

In Palestinian Citizens of Israel: Power, Resistance and the Struggle for Space, Sharri Plonski writes that the ‘everyday operations of (Israel’s) colonial geography… have become normal, acceptable and increasingly unchallengeable’ (p. 210). In doing so, she has encapsulated the situation we face today, where critics of Israel are accused of “anti-Semitism” and the state’s contempt for international laws and conventions — demonstrated by what have been called its ‘war crimes and crimes against humanity’ — is disregarded by Western governments which otherwise claim to champion human rights. Zionists and their allies like to point out that Israel ‘is the only democracy in the Middle East’, and yet its policies, even against one-fifth of its own citizens, suggest otherwise.
